I found this piece in Northern Illinois yesterday in a heavily wooded area near or on an old home site
that I know existed in 1938 (it was on a 1938 aerial photo of the area).

I believe the thin round piece (left) may have at one time swiveled through the circular opening and
the curved end (right) was originally attached to something that has now been broken away.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Does the little flap swing back to cover the hole in the rod? Monty

I believe the circular "flap" part at one time would swing freely back & forth through the "hole"
section. . . it doesn't anymore because corrosion has frozen it in the position it's in now.

The entire piece (except the circular flap) appears to have been cast and not machine-tooled.

Could this be part of a hood ornament of an old car?. . . this thought just came to mind ???

I have found these myself and have found that they are the rests for old wic burning candles. Yours looks a bit different though. Just a guess

Many thanks for your research!

The area that this was found and its general land-use activities pre-date the auto so your thoughts make perfect sense

Thanks again,

CRUSADER, thank you too! :)
