brass or bronze compass??? anyone know??

Does anyone know anything about this small compass? ....age...year..what it was used for? (there is a small threaded shaft on the bottom and the top is real glass) says france under the SW

No ring or match box cars the yard had alot of pull tabs in it but I did find what I think is an old flower pin ....it is a very hard area to find anything specific in
