Dug this yesterday and it is very heavy brass, patina is old,and I have no idea what it is but am wondering if it is Civil War related as it was found right where the Confederate lines went through and bullets were found. I wondered if it could be sword related. It is three inches long but crushed on one end. There is a hole on each side, both lined up the same way as if maybe a rivet fell out .

You can see how one end is rough and the other end is rounded on each side.

Sorry for the bump but one more picture so you can see on the rolled end there is a rectangular shape to it as well,as if something rectangular would be inserted maybe. You can see the corresponding holes better.Like I said, this end seemed finished and the other where it is crushed is not.

I most respectfully dissagree.it is brass...an unlikely choice in most circumstances for a common gardening tool.also the rolled edge indicates something of some stature.I suspect it is flag related or the like.a simple guess.

cheers

Bigfoot it is much heavier brass than what one would attach to a rake and you can see shiny brass where I scraped it in digging it but I also don't want to imagine its something its not. I have seen sword throats before and one end is flat and the other is rolled with a rectangle where the blade would go but again, that could be my over active imagination, lol. On a good note,my mister found a US breastplate yesterday evening,a target I walked right over.DOH!

I don't know much at all about civil war relics, but here's a shot in the dark..... possibly the end of a civil war cannon cleaning rod?

Hmmm...I dunno jewelry guy.I think I'm going to take this little puzzling gem to my metal detecting club on Friday and see if anyone knows. I always find the most obscure stuff.
