I was scouting around today for some new permissions around a mid 1800s town site and the first two were a no, but I scored a yes on the third. The only interesting thing I found was what I think to be a piece of brass horse tack down about 6”. I’m not sure if it is old or not, but if anyone knows for sure what it is that would help. I did score a reference and a phone number to the guy that owns 100 acres next door that the town site is on. I’ve been looking at that site for years and trying to find info on it so hopefully I can get a new permission on the original site.

Not positive it's horse tack, but if it is I'd guess that it was used on the billet straps/cinch area.

Yes I’m not sure about it being tack, that’s what came to mind when I found it. It could be a strap button of some type. It reminds me of a knapsack j hook but a solid bar, it would be the same principle with a push through button or maybe a hook. There were confederate troops moving through this town all during the war and the property owner said he found a cw bayonet as well, but brass buckle/hooks are all over the board in age so it could be modern too. It’s 2.25” across the inside, so it would fit a 2” strap.

I think what you have is a bit more modern than CW. I've seen similar buckles on military pistol belts from the WWII era. In fact, when I joined the Air Force in 1977 they were still being issued. It looks very similar to the M1936 type (pictured) so I would think late 1930s at best.
