Found this in the woods today. It seems to be made of brass and quite heavy for its size. As you can see it's about 3 and 1/4 inches long. It is tapered, has a hole going thru it near the threads. I can see maybe why this was discarded as between the threads and the hole there is a place where a a nut head has been stripped. It doesnt show so well from the angle you see here. sorry.
Also found this little metal flowery thing in the same area.
Thanks for any help on these items!

Not sure but the first thing that crossed my mind was a pencil sharpener handle

A pencil sharpener is an excellent guess. :icon_thumleft: I'll throw a few more in...

Clock winding key, coffee grinder, fishing reel handle, phone crank, phonograph crank.

Are there any markings at all on the handle?

I'm going to say the handle to some sort of valve. Turning it one way the hole would line up with holes in the housing (missing) and allow fluid, air, etc to flow through. Turning it the other way would block off the holes. Tapered so if it developed a leak tighting up the nut (also missing) on the treaded end would cause a tighter fit in the bore. Just a wild guess and likely wrong. :icon_pirat:

thanks for all the ideas. Yes, I am leaning more towards the idea of a valve because of the hole. No there are no markings of any kind on it.

Only problem withe the valve theory is when turning cc they tend to unscrew rather than do the job intended.... I go with the crank for something else thought, and lean toward old phone or record player....

Phonograph crank or a telephone crank are great guesses. I thought of the old steam engine tractors as well. They had all sorts of valves and complex arrangements. I do think the hole is integral to the handle. There may have been a shaft passing through the hole, which has since fallen out. Or, it made have been to allow liquid to flow through it. It appears to be very well made. Almost instrument quality.
