✅ SOLVED Brass eagle shield and star - Civil war? What is it?

Thin brass, found in Southeast, NY in an area with relics from mid 1800s. I am new here and would appreciate any help to ID this.

Nice debut post, sir. I'd like to see more photos in natural light, if you'd be so kind. It looks to be a plumed hat device to my untrained eye.

I am thinking the same thing as Surf, and if it is it is pre-civil war, possibly back as far as the 1812 war era. Nice find!!

Wow! Thank you all very much. I am also now convinced that it is a Shako plume holder and that it is much older than I'd anticipated.

My daughter found this with me, and is amazed to have found something from the very beginning of the United States. I think this may hook her on history!
