Dug this today with my minelab explorerSE in a early 1800's farm yard in Salem County, Southern New Jersey. It is 5 1/4 inches x 2 1/2 inches and is 1/8 and 1/4 inches thick in different areas. I have no idea what it is!?

First... I see you are brand-new here at TreasureNet, so... welcome to the "What-Is-It" forum, the best place on the internet for getting unknown objects correctly identified. :)

Second... some friendly advice:
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/136849-please-read-before-posting-items-what.html
For example, you did not tell us the object's size... nor the location (country, state, town area) where you found it -- which can be extremely important for correctly identifying it.

I don't know what it is but I sure do like it judging from the style of the eagle I'm going to guess later rather than earlier 1800s . looks like a pretty heavy cast brass. I would assume it must have been some type of adornment on a steamer trunk 4 piece of furniture or something like that. it kind of reminds me of the top of a stand we used to have that held our fireplace implements .

a closer look reveals that the Eagles feet look a bit weird I'm betting this was a door knocker.
