Just to make a guess, I would think it may be a bridal rosette.

Yes it was found at an old castle and I imagine there was an army on horse back.. These were close by.. Musket balls? Caipher ?

Could you post a pic of the back to see the type of attachment? Judging by the front, it looks like a bridle rosette as duggap said. You said it was found at a 'castle;' where was it found? :) Breezie

Front and back.. I don't see anywhere it could have attached.. No broken pins or anything that could have been mounted.. Was found at Doe Castle Donegal Ireland .. This button was found in the same field a few months ago by me... Canadian ?
