I found this at a civil war skirmish site. Couldn't make anything out on it at first, but then I got home and took a little of the corrosion off and found an outline around a "ST" or an "LS" and a small hole on the bottom (or top). Any ideas?

Taz42o is correct, as usual... your find is a civil war era US Cavalry horse-bit's "boss." I think I should mention that yours has been severely hammered-on, which flattened the raised rim and lettering, and caused the small split you see in it... and is why part of it broke off.
