Hello Tnet,
Found this brass cap on a field where i've found a lot of pottery and an old coin dating 1711.

It it has small lines at the bottom.
And a hole on the top.

Anybody knows what its use was and how old ?

Bell??? Perhaps a hames bell or at least a bell associated with horse harness.

The smooth ridge around the outside edge looks like a valve seat, making me think poppet valve for an old water pump. Tony

If it had a rubber seal around the edge it would probably work as a bicycle pump piston.
Edit: no, those are just flat... Darn it reminds me of something like that.
