Brass button?

I found this metal button in an area that's known for civil war artifacts. I don't think it is a CW button but you never know. All it took was a little water and the golden color came right out. So any ideas, common or CW?

It is called a "Fashion" button, made for fancy civilian-clothing. Having a rusted iron back, which causes any backmark (maker's-marking) to be unreadable makes it impossible to date. Because the front cleaned up golden using nothing but water, it is most probably from the latter half of the 20th-Century.
