Hello,
I am new to the board and finally bought a digital camera. I have found several "What's it"s over the years and this I am most curious about. Found it at an old cellar hole sight in the woods near Annapolis, Maryland. Sight was very old with numerous clay pipe stems, colonial shoe buckles, etc.

It appears to have a center horn flanked by two ships with a drum at the bottom. The ships may have words on banners at the bottom, but too illegible to make out. It appears to have been painted at one time, some red? Maybe corrosion.

Shank is approx 1 1/2" long and the hole is drilled at an angle.
Any ideas?
Chris

Welcome to TreasureNet Tripp...

Neat piece...

I'm wondering what it actually is... a button?

Flanked by ships?? Would love to see a closer picture... if possible.

Still figuring camera out, however, this sight would not accept my larger pictures, I had to reduce to "best for web". Can email larger photos if you'd like. I was thinking this may more likely be a cuff link than a button.

Assuming you are using a microsoft windows...

1. Open the file using the program "Microsoft Paint"
2. Select "Image" from the top, and then select "Stretch/Skew"
3. Resize your picture by changing the size percentage for "stretch"... try 50 percent
4. Save your picture as a .jpg file, and try posting it again.

That is one cool relic ;D I have seen some long shanks on buttons before but never one this long,i wonder if it may have been made like this to fasten to a drum or something else. Longest shaft on a button i have seen....I think its rev war drum hardware..

A Drum with two crossing flags & a horn/bugle type instrument in the centre. Clearly a Military band related object. Very nice & seems to have some age to it.

I assume it will turn out to be some attachment relating to a drummer boy(to fix the drum strap together for example) or band member, but I have never seen one like it.

I'll wait to see what happens...........

On Facebook one of the guys found the same item, so I spent some time researching and am fairly certain it is from NLT War of 1812, so I asked one of our best researchers on TNet what she thought it might be and I am 100% sure she nailed it. A Butt Cap from a Flintlock pistol!................................
