Brass Button Identification Assistance

Hi, My son found this with his detector in a marsh near a wireless radio station. Says U.S.M. S.S. Co. and S. Appel & Co. on back. Is it navy, merchant service, very hard to find info on this... IMG_0741.jpg

If you soak in lemon juice for 5 mins & nail brush the front, it will come up nice. Rinse well with water after.
