I found this bell in the same general location as the iron stirrup that I posted earlier today. It is brass with an iron gong, and is about 2 1/4" in diameter. There is a remaining "sandwich" of leather between the two square nuts at the top. Would this be a livestock bell or would it be horse-related, or something else? The only livestock bells that I'm familiar with are the larger rectangular cow bells. This has no markings other than a decorative groove around the base, about 1/4" above the rim. It was about 10" deep, in heavy clay. Could this date from the 1860s?

I hope someone else helps out... 'cause I have no idea about the bell itself except to say that it certainly looks like it could date to the 1860s given the rust and petina... IMO.

Yes sir!!! A Pre 1860 livestock bell!!

The last one I actualy saw was in the Smithsonian and that was in 1996.
The ones I saw were used as locater type bells for a dairy herd ... of goats.

Awsome !

What a cool find,

Old Dog
