Just wondering what this melted brass is I have been finding. Have found chunks as big as belt buckle and pieces as small as this nickel. All melted and charred. All was very deep. I have found badly charred square nails and seated coins here so not sure. Could these be pieces of broken discarded buckles. And has anyone seen this before.

The problem with unrecognizable burnt metal on a battlefield, is that it could have come from pretty much anything. It's near impossible to identify what it started out as unless some of the original form remains. It may not even be related to the battle, but could have come from before or after, and without any defining features it'll be near impossible to id.

Well, what items on a battlefield would have been made of brass? That's where I would start, although keeping in mind what NOLA_Ken has said.

I meant to add the brass pieces came out of some pits we have test dug and found some burned square nails and lead and also a badly charred seated dime. So was just asking what y'all thought they would have burned that was brass. These items were at about 2 foot deep in a field where we have had some good luck as far as trash pits and fire pits
