I am a seasoned metal detecting enthusiast who seems to be bit by the "artifact hunting" bug. I recently walked a plowed field and found an arrowhead with my daughter. Great fun! We were both very excited.

Next time out, I found this stone. It caught my eye because of the symmetry, but I really became excited when I noticed how it fit my hand perfectly. The images do not show it well, but there is a well worn arc-shaped groove where my back finger curls around the stone.

What is this? Is this some sort of little chipping tool? Seems like it would have been for fine work. The "point" is tapered from both sides -- seemingly intentionally.

I apologize in advance if you all just tell me I found a rock!

there are several artefacts in my area of florida that looks similar to that. some of which are believed to have been knapping tools. used in the point making process. look closely at that protruding part does it show usage like little chips have broken off? I'm not at home now but I will see if I had a photo or 2 on my phone

a worn down spurred graver is also a possibility. they are believed to have been used for scoring bone in the process ok making bone tools and pins. here are some end pieces of deer leg bones that's still show the score marks.

I always get a kick at looking at that piece in the first photo. I can't help but believe the person who made it saw the natural coloration that looks just like a duck head..ha ha

Just a stone..........keep your head down and looking. You will find one soon enough...............................GTP(Chris)

i dont see any evidence of that ever being altered by man....right steve:) ....i'm determined to make that phrase more popular....it's my fav.

Just a rock in my opinion LSeidl. But good eye and congrats on makin a connection. I thought goose at first on that first pic, always learning. Goose, duck, kinda cool. Keep after it LSeidl. Detecting and arrowhead hunting can go hand in hand. Best of luck!
