Hello all. My son and I are new to CRH & Metal Detecting.
I feel it's a way for him to understand history & how to save money as well. I want him to also understand the value of what real money is vs crap money.
Today, after buying $20 in penny rolls, we found 11 wheaties and this 1980 Penny with a stamp of OHIO on it. Sure it's a novelty, but he was pumped. He's 12. I hope I attach these right?
Happy Hunting to all.

hi welcome to the hobby(and forum)!
i found a penny with a VA stamp that was the same style as that

That's pretty interesting. I have never seen that. Does anyone know the history or story behind these?

From what I have read, it is basically a 1980s penny, that was stamped AFTER being minted as a novelty / tourist type item to make some additional money on. The best part is we live in Ohio, so it's something we appreciate. We know it's not a $1 million find, but to us, seeing we found it in our CRH today, it's priceless to us.

Sorting through pennies is awesome, I found one a few months back with the Kennedy head stamped to it. A keeper for sure!

If your son is 12 he should be in Boy Scouts. After all, there IS a Coin Collecting merit badge. ;-)

Cool find, BTW.

Welcome!

I have found all kinds of stamped pennies and halves. Like the others mentioned it apparently was a cool thing to back in the day.

That was a neat find!! Welcome to the forum and to this highly rewarding hobby! You can find all kinds of little treasures. HH

Good luck with the MD and CRH. My oldest is 7 and we are CRH to kill some time until the weather breaks and we can MD and do some fishing. Not only is all of this a great hobby, in my opinion, but it is a much better way to spend his time than Mr Square Pants or video games.

I will have to make sure my fiancé knows about this badge. My oldest is a tiger cub for the time being, and he would be so excited to share his collection. He gets most excited to find Canadian pennies. So I started him a little collection. No book yet, first I have to figure out where to buy one. I attached an image of what we have found so far CRH cents. The second image is an updated graph where I crossed out dates as we found them. I need to update it again bc I have a 12 ounce cup about half full with Canadians that we haven't checked against our list.

Out of curiosity, if you kept the coin, was it the same year as mine?

Thread has one from 1976 with Ca stamped on it and one I found with Lincoln smoking a pipe.

Nice find Draw, Cents are a good coin to collect and you almost never get any without finding something worth saving. Nice way to spend time with your son and good lessons to teach him. My son is 26 now and I wonder what I find will be worth when he is my age. Good luck and happy hunting.

The penny we have is 1980, copper

the pennies i have that post date 1940 go back into circulation, - Minus the wheats lol
