You might be right, but aren't those four holes in the ends countersunk for screws?

I don't think that is a bit.
That would be a little big.

you get big horses, & i think I saw where it broke off

Thanks for the replies guys. Yea, those holes look like they would be for some fastener of sorts, screws etc. So this may still be a mystery jgas
