I got a call from my normal pickup bank saying someone gave them $500 in halves and they saved it for me. Knowing it was probably a dump, I took it anyway so they won't have a problem doing it again. Turns out that not only is it a skunk, but every single roll is 1 coin short. That's $25 total for the whole box.

Do you think anything can be done about this? Even if the guy that dumped them is a 1-time visitor do you think they would be able to find him (security cameras maybe?) and get the $25 back? Are there any possible for consequences intentional roll shortage?

Edit: I went in today and told them about it. They apologized and paid me back the $25 I was missing. They then let me look through any halves in the tray I wanted and I pulled 8 x 40%'ers for $4. Gotta love it.

I would bring it up sooner than later thats for sure....maybe they can, maybe they won't , depends on your relationship with the bank.

I stopped doing CWR quarters for that reason, I was getting pennies, peso, chalupas, & hot fudge sundae stuffers in my rolls.

If a few dime rolls have a penny here or there I dont care, but once you get above that it starts adding up fast!

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

That really stinks that you bought the box knowing that it was probably a dump mostly just as a favor to the bank and you get shorted $25. I would mention it to the bank asap - maybe someone at the bank might remember who it was since it was an unusual transaction. I think GSS had a similar problem like this with cwr quarters a couple of months ago and I think he said the bank refunded his money so maybe there's hope.

Good luck.

Thats one way to get ahead in the CRH game At that rate its better than 2 90's per box. If this happens too often there could be some serious policy changes at some banks.

What area are you in that this is happening?

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

I mainly do bags and my rule is I don't bother saying anything unless the total is more than $2 off in either direction except halves (as I expect those to be off).

I've never had any to report any offages with pennies, nickels, or quarters. I could have on halves, but those have always been at banks I am unlikely to return to due to distance, so I haven't bothered.

Which leaves only dimes. They are the only bags that are consistently off. Oddly, I find that they are more often high than low at the banks I pick up from. I have reported many offages in the $2 - $5 range in my favor and a couple that were nearly $100 in my favor as well as 1 or 2 that were in the $2 to $3 in the banks favor. Everytime I have told the bank they gave me more than I paid for, they have told me to keep the extra as their books match and they don't show any offage. As such they would have no way to bring it in to their books. By reporting the overages, I figure I have gained the trust of the banks that I buy bags from such that if any major shortage appears I could comfortably report it, and there is a reasonable that they would reimburse me. Not that I would push it as I believe I am likely still in the plus range in the overage/shortage battle.

Now, when it comes to the box in question, I would definitely bring it up. I am not sure how hard I would push the issue, but I would at least make the teller/bank aware of it for future reference in case the same person comes back and tries to pull the same trick a second time. If you do it right, you can give the bank an opening to make you whole without faulting them.

VERY good advice!!!!!

I got a box of dimes this week that was off by 1 roll and it was factory sealed. Its part of the game, the risk we take. You might be down $25 yesterday by that box but in a week you might find a solid roll and this mishap will be all but forgotten.

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

it's people like that who reroll shorted rolls who are going to kill this "hobby". It's nice enough that banks let us indulge in ordering boxes at their expense, and jerks like this see it as a way to skim some money. Not cool at all.

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

:( I would let the bank know. You did them a favor to take someone's dump. If the person is their customer, they might be able to track down who did it. Since you didn't count the rolls there, they most likely will not be able to do anything about it but it is worth to let them know. I had a similiar situtation recently with a bank that I didn't have a account with. They sold me a bag of halfs that they said it had $543. in it. When I opened it up & went thru it, it only had $500. I went back to the bank yesterday & advised them of it. They checked & called me back late yesterday afternoon. It turns out there was a 2nd bag with the additional $43 in it. I went back this morning & picked it up. I all ready went thru it & found a 40% 68 Kennedy. Hopefully you will have some good luck with them.

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

That's beat, to have some low life short each roll... Most of us CRH'ers are decant people and would rather put an extra coin in one roll to make up for a possible miscount. I know I would(if i had to re-roll my finds).

Anyway, just be calm and honest with the tellers, do not push them or rush them, be polite... It should all work out, and if not, well, they'll be on the look-out for that "dumper".

We all take losses with this hobby, but remember, that $25 loss is basically 2 90% coins, and in perspective, a little work, and a $1 loss ;D

Still, I hope everything works out. May your next box of halves be granny's dumps !

Re: Box of Halves - Major Shortage

I run into shortages often.......just part of the game. $25 is a pretty big shortage though.

I went in today and told them about it. They apologized and paid me back the $25 I was missing. They then let me look through any halves in the tray I wanted and I pulled 8 x 40%'ers for $4. Gotta love it.

That was certainly a great resolution to the situation & you scored more silver too - couldn't have worked out any better than that! :)

Glad to hear they took care of you. Buy 'em breakfast one morning next week to say thanks.

Gr8 ending except picking thru halves in front of a teller is probably one of the worst moves to make if you wnat to get silver from that bank long term .

I cant keep track of how many banks i have gotten silver from that now keep it for themselves . The last was a TD bank that would have silver in the tray that they would give me but now keep it for themselves as some collector was asking for halves before 1971 and a light went off.

On the other side of the story is a key bank that i was explaining this exact scenario to a young kid and his mother when the teller overheard me and said he wouldnt keep the halves. So maybe im wrong sometimes, i guess if a teller realizes that a roll of 90% is worth $240 that teller and anyone else in that bank that realizes its value wouldnt mind giving it up.

And yes i have gotten silver from tellers who knew its worth but why take chances.

I've had the same thing happen to me a couple of times at my local bank; they offered to make up the difference which wasn't much. I told them no big deal but in reality I didn't want to mess up my privileges I receive there. I have made more than enough silver there to cover my losses.
