Bowl or Cup

Hello all, just wondering your thoughts on the one. I seen this in a antique mall yesterday, and brought it home because of the bottom. It is 6 in in height and around 5in at the widest. The art work looks painted on not stenciled. Any idea of culture that may of created this is it is older. Also, not sure if it is ivory. I took a close up to show the pattern which looks cross pattern. Thank you for the help.

I have a piece similar to that and it's made out of tortoise shell

Looks to me like bone Ivory. brilliant white when cut but looks like old teeth when aged!
