I remember buying my first metal detector from JCpenneys in the mid 80s.It was the Bounty Hunter Red Baron and cost around $300 or so back then.I kept returning them to Penneys because each one looked like a refeb because the coil was always scratched up a bit,And i also had one that was a DOA....I think i had about 5 of them untill i gave up and just kept it.It did not look like a cheap unit,it was red and a RED BARON lol...wondering if anyone used it and what they think about it?Jt

Never had one but i sure remember them. Does it have the white stripe on the side? HH

Yea i think it had the white stripe on it.Then a few years later it looked like penneys where selling the cheaper looking plastic units.had i think 4 knobs on it.Looked like a good unit at the time.Wonder if bounty hunter was a top detector back then or just a cheap unit like they sold at radio shacks lol.Jt

I had a bounty hunter red baron about 1979 and bought it from wards. Had to take the first one back but the next one worked ok. It was a good machine and it went deep. The only thing I didn't like was it was very unstable(electronics) and some days it worked great and other days it would drive you nuts. I also had a Whites 6000D and found that the Bounty hunter red baron went just as deep but the white was much more stable.

I remember always having to Adjust it on the beach,,,,,Need to get out and use my Garett CX3 that i only used twice in 10 years and still looks new in my case lol....Johnny

Wow, That goes back a ways. It was somewhere around 78 or so, think I was around 13. My uncle had a couple old garrett BFO's and had got me interested in detecting and I had already eyeballed a buffalo nickle in our garden. Anyhow, My best friend got a Bounty Hunter Red Barron VLF/TR Automatic(or something like that) for Christmas but he wanted a Sheridan Pellet rifle like I had bought a few months before. Since he did not use the detector his parents said it was ok to trade it for my pellet rifle. I never had any problem with it. Found lots of coins and my 1st silver Quarter. It had a button on the handle that I never really understood. Seemed like it ground balnaced it because when it got unstable I would push the button and all was fine.

Yea Yea Yea that was the button to adjust the unit,Found a few things at the beach.I think i got mine in 1995 or 96,i guess they were REFERBS at JC pennys. And then the next year they all were plastic units..Jt
