The tongs look like ones I've used in a restaurant for escargot

I've often wondered why a people on TN buy things at garage or rummage sales not knowing what they are?

Stefen...
People usually buy stuff at yard sales not knowing what it is because they are curious, and they don't want to go home and look it up because they it might be very valuable and they are afraid that someone else is going to buy it.

Hard to tell from the pictures but, if it's big enough it looks like a warmer, perhaps for a Teapot.

I think it is missing the top and it is a roll/bun/bread warmer for table service.

It looks like a 'warmer' (buns, biscuits, bread, etc.) The earlier ones like pictured below, used to fold-up to keep the heat inside, then opened when placed on the table. Yours is the next generation of warmers that had a lid to keep the heat inside.

Neat score from a Yard Sale! :)
