Nice score... loose wire on the board most likely

Thanks I'll take the cover off and take a look

You got a good deal on a very good detector.
Check speaker wire connection.
Check speaker, run wires from an AA battery to speaker, it should pop when second wire touches speaker terminal.
I have had this problem with Whites and usually headphones will still work.
It is most commonly a speaker or connection problem and not a fault in the audio circuit.
If it is a circuit board fault, it would be worth sending to Whites UK service center.

Check the headphone jack. There is usually a contact that completes the speaker circuit when the headphones are not plugged in. When headphone plug is inserted it opens the connection so that the speaker is off. This contact is basically like a spring and it can get bent so that it will not make the speaker connection when no headphones are plugged in. If you have audio with headphones, this supports this theory.

The speaker could also be dead or unplugged from the board....but this is relatively unlikely IMHO.

Like J-rob mentions those vintage Whites tended to have headphone jack issues with the contact that closes when you remove the headphones.

Great idea think that might be it

IT WORKED! Thanks dude I unscrewed the jack and it was full of dirt, it's working fine now.

Good deal. I'm glad you got your Whites XLT working again. The XLT is a proven detector. Best of luck to you with many great finds and saves.

Congrats on the quick fix! :occasion14:

Good job! Welcome to the world of White's maintenance!:tongue3:

You'll enjoy that XLT. I still have one that I try to take out once in a while. Very versatile and still a competent machine for many purposes.
