Hello again everyone from the depths of Mother Earth! Don and I took a couple of days to try and get to the bottom of this box It was tough but we made it all the way down to "Tranquility Base". So to speak. Started the first day digging the pit that was closest to the home which dated to 1870's. Started to probe the area and found that the beginnings of the "use layer" was around 4 to 5 feet deep. We started digging and after about an hour or so we finally got to the top layer. We started to pull out numerous shards of pottery, plates and bottles. Grabbed up the Rubifoam for Teeth bottle which appears to be around 1880's.
Kept going and I started to find pieces of double eagle flasks The heart breakers continued as I pulled out no less than 3 shattered double eagles. We did find some other nice bottles along the way. A Dr. Kilmers Female Remedy, Dr. Pierces Golden Medical Discovery and some smaller sample bottles form clean breath
Then the walls started to slide in. We were only 6 feet deep so we were not too worried about any major collapse but it was just annoying to have to keep removing all the dirt when we were right on top of the use layer. So we decided to give it up and come back with "The Box."
Day two and the construction of the box to try to help the walls from slipping down onto the pit. We did make it all the way to the base again and found a few more keepers, ink wells, marbles and buttons. But no more signs of the eagle flasks. The walls did pretty good to keep the dirt from falling in but alas it was just too much. We probably removed twice the amount of dirt that we usually take from one pit. About 10 tons of dirt(or at least it felt like that much)
On to the next pit about 20 feet away. We did not have the collapse issue and found a few more keepers. The Paines Celery Compound, Chatanooga wines, inks, blank beers, and 50 or so misc. utilitarian medicines All in all we did pretty well but we were mad that the pits did not produce the Killer find that were were hoping for. One of the better finds I think was a Patented topper from 1886 that fits on the Thatcher Milk bottle we dug last season. So that kinda completes that bottle. Hope you enjoy the pics. There are quite a few of them. Goodluck out there and be safe as always! jgas
