Just curious abut this bottle cap. I ran into a bunch of these in all conditions while detecting. They were mixed in with pre 1930 cans ,so possible around that age also. Just wondering if anyone knew the brand of beer , soda or whatever they were off of.

Re: Bottle Cap ?

What's the diameter of them? They remind me of the plastic lids currently on spring water carboys.

Certainly appear ready to contain carbonated or otherwise pressurized something.

Did Red Star yeast ever come in a liquid form?

Re: Bottle Cap ?

Yes I should of put a quarter beside them for size comparison. The are about the size of a quarter or regular bottle cap. There was no type of seal in any that I dug but it may of went away over time if there was. The area that I found them was worked for gold back in the gold rush years of California and then again during the depression. Since it was mostly all men working the fields I just had in my mind probably some old brand of Beer. but still haven't came up with anything even close.

I don't think there was ever any seal on this item. It is a cork retainer - similar to those wire thingies you find on modern champagne bottles.

Hey thanks,,,you were right on the closure King !! Got it nailed ! Also a big thanks to everyone else who responded and took interest in helping me figure this cap out.

Hi Mick, thanks for your question and I think what you have is a Alfred L. Bernardin closure that was patented on March 24, 1885. They were matalic caps secured to the bottle by thin sheet metal strips that in turn attached to a collar that went around the bottle neck. You can see by the picture that I have attached that your example is identical but for the writting on the cap. They were used to carry all sorts of product advertising for many different beverages. Hope this answers your question and good luck treasure hunting. David Graci

P.S. yes it was used just to hold in a cork in the bottle and not as the seal itself.
