I found myself with a little time today, after running all my appointed errands and "duties" from the honey'do list. So. I did what any of the rest of you metal detecting addicts..er..uh.. aficionados would do.. I went detecting! It sure was an UGLY day to be going detecting though. I mean, the temperature was not bad. Hell, for January it was down right balmy at nearly 50 degrees, but the threat of rain hung heavy in the wind. Not just rain, but Thunder storms.. IN JANUARY Geez! Tornadoes? Blizzards? WHat's Next? Sand Storms? <shaking head in amazement>
Yeah.. and I went detecting anyway! I drove to the next town over, where my brother lives, and while he was not able to go on the hunt with me today, he had pointed me in the direction of a couple of the parks in that town. I began with a neighborhood park that has three baseball fields as well as concession stands and picnic shelters. My brother told me that one area in particular used to have playground equipment on it, but the equipment has been removed.. but was there anything left behind that I might find I wondered. Gearing up with my knee pads, digger and finds pouch (on my "utility belt") gloves and of course my detector, I began sweeping the grassy area where the equipment used to be. Always keeping on wary eye on the ever darkening clouds overhead.
I found a fair amount of clad, along with some pull tabs and some other curious odd bits of metal. Nothing to right home about. I also found someone's ball glove. Some kid is going to be sick about it I'm sure.. or some adult.. it does seem to be big enough to fit an adult. Oh well. Just another mitt in my toy box. No name or anything on the glove that would lend itself to identifying the owner.. so just add it to my growing collection I guess.
I'd just found a nice pocket spill under a small shade tree next to one of the ball diamonds when a rather close flash of lightning and a VERY quick boom of thunder announced that the hunt was over! I might be nuts about this hobby, but I'm a bit timid about swinging my electrified hunting stick around when Mother Nature's fireworks are on display. Ain't NO clad out there worth getting ZAPPED over. I finished digging up the last of seven coins within a ten inch wide circle when the heavens opened up and the deluge began. Luckily my truck was only a few yards away, still though I got rather damp. Thinking my hunting for the day was over, unless I wanted to wade through the cats and dogs now swamping the playground, I headed for home.
Home however, got put off a little while longer. On my drive towards home, the rain subsided.. at least where I was along my route towards home. I passed by one of the larger parks near my neighborhood and thought I'd take advantage of the lull in the weather and get in a few more minutes of detecting. And I did! I found some more clad, pull tabs, and a pair of Jack'o'lantern booties or socks for a very small child or an infant. This is the same park that I found the abandoned baby in last summer.. but I don't think they are related. <grin>
And then the rain resumed... with a vengeance! Thunder, Lightning, and torrential down pours.. even hail !! OH HAIL!!! Home I went!
Of all the clad I found today, all $3.73 of it, One penny caught my eye. It was one of the ones I dug up at the ball field/park and it was pitted pretty badly, but that's not what caught my eye, it was the outer rim of the coin. I think I may have tumbled on a mistruck coin (is that the right terminology?). One side of the face of the coin has a rather thick "rim" and the other side is almost non existant. Check out these pics and let me know what you think. Oh, the back side looks fine, other than some pitting.. weird.
