I've seen lots of toe guards (I call them toe "taps"), but I've never seen a heel guard before.

I'd guess they're the same time frame as the taps are: 1840 to 1880, give or take.

It may be off a trunk.

if it was off a trunk wouldn't it be bent at a 90 degree angle to go on the corner of a trunk? this is curved and fits perfectlly around the back of my heel.has the holes to tap nails into actual heel.

I would say it was attached to something wooden, holes are to large to go into a boot.

Maybe?

Holes would be hidden under the boot and nailed into the heel/sole of the boot.

was just a wild guess. There are other brackets besides corners on old steamer chests. But looking closer, it appears that the holes are only across the bottom which I didnt notice before. So I guess I change my guess.
