My husband is digging up about four feet of concrete to remove an old clothes line and found this in the dirt/clay around it. Looks like possibly a bone but not sure.

It's definitely bone. From what is impossible to determine.

I have a whole bucket of bones now. I'll need to figure out how to clean them up. The feel almost petrified.

I'm sorry to say they look like modern domesticated animals. The good news? This might be the remains of an old colonial dump. Check it out with a sifter and metal detector and look carefully for glass.

Animals remains would be fine with me since its in our yard. We bought a home that has been in the same family since it was built in 1930. We are attempting to remove this huge metal pole that has two ends concreted in the ground. Looks like one side of a laundry line but massive. We have found all sorts of odd things including whole bottles, broken plates, weird metal , and old pottery with melted looking wax, what appears to be a gold earring. Just random stuff , but why? And this pole has been here for 50 plus years.

We did have a police officer from a near by town to call the police to have a look because the family here has always had ties to some sort of " organization " the said mafia.

Sounds like I would love to metal detect your yard

GatorBoy I have a beginner metal detector and have been wanting to start detecting. We have one dug about five feet down and about four feet across and have found so much. Very odd discovery for sure. We will continue this evening . One of my daughters has been trying to dig something big and metal out but it got too dark last night. It's exciting for sure.

It definitely looks like a trash pit.. If I were you I would look for some datable items bottles or anything that might have a date on it.
If you would post photos of the ceramic pieces myself or someone could probably figure out a time period on those

I'll more pics of the actual hole once I get my little one down. It's become too dangerous for him to be around.
But these bottles were found about four or five feet down.

Well immediately looking at the mason jar the Kerr product line started in 1903 and looking at the type of lid yours would have had it was from 1915 or later.. They literally still make them the same today.
That may be grease or bacon fat in whatever that section of pot is that you have there I really believe you just have a trash pile there that was buried sometime between 1930 and when the original homeowners stopped adding to it.
If you're a bottle hunter it might be need to pull out whatever bottles you can find in there otherwise I would just burry the area and make it as safe as possible.
You probably have a good shot at finding a bunch of older silver coins in the yard from the 19 thirties forties and fifties maybe some even older.
Probably a lot of wheat pennies and maybe a few Indian Head pennies in there too

Not fossilized bone. What did the police say?:cross:

Yes, the anthropologist from our local university was kind enough to look at them. What a neat experience and learned so much between this forum and her.

GatorBoy, and you are exactly right about area we are digging. Found an old rusted out 55 gallon drum and many more cool bottles. This experience has also led my daughter looking into the field of archeology or anthropology.
