I know over in Egypt and many other places around the world in history they used bones for jewelry and even for gauge compensations those bones would have been flat and smoother used for that. I have excavated bone knifes before but only with the bone being the handle of the knife. The artifact of yours would probably date to the 18th or 19th century and seeing you are from Virginia and figuring you found it in VA. More of less this was made for another purpose then a knife more then likely a tool of some sort
