LOL Is this really true? I didnt realize that. Do they have dentures? :D Seems like it would be hard to chew without upper teeth. I know deer and elk have upper and lower.

I did a little googling and found that cows do indeed have upper and lower molars and this looks like a molar. They have inscissor teeth only on the bottom. I guess thats were the misunderstanding is. Grass needs to really be ground up to digest. I think they even chew their cud like deer.

Although it is most likely cow!I'm not sure yet how to tell from cow and Bison? As I found a skull cap that a Guy Preident of N.C. Fossil Culb and now works at a fossil musem told me was from a bison 20,000 to 250,000 years old.And a number of these teeth have came from this place leaving me to only assume that some has to be from Bison! Some are horse easier to tell them, others are pig,and gator. All I've found this year. Also have a hand full not in these pics. That I need to clean from my last hunt.

Here was the statement sent back to me!

We've sent out your photos to a few contacts this morning. We've gotten our first response from a local geologist who is past president of the North Carolina Fossil Club, Rich Olson.

Here is his response:
"What he has is indeed a horn and portion of the skull cap of a bison. It is likely of mid to late Pleistocene 250,000 to 20,000 years old. Probable species name is Bison antiquus. This is an uncommon but not rare fossil from "ice age" river gravel deposits from Virginia through Florida."

If we hear anything from anyone else I will forward that on as well. Nice find!

Hope to see you at the museum again soon,

Wow interesting discussion. I had found a couple more of these and believe I tossed them. I am going to check the trash bucket to save it now.
bigcy, I am understanding the upper and lower teeth confussion. Now I think of it, when you see a cow eating, the continuous grinding make sence. :icon_thumleft: :hello2:

Great pics timekiller.

Cows have 32 permanant teeth. They have 8 incisors on the botton jaw. On the top front, cows have a tough pad of skin instead of teeth. They have 8 incisors on the bottom front and 6 strong molars on the top and bottom of each side for a total of 24 molars to grind their food. (The molars are way back). Cows have a total of 32 teeth.

I think deer are similar. Ill have to look closer at the next deer I see. Older deer seem to lose their teeth as they get grinded down chewing sand, twigs and bark.
