Well to me it looks like glass but its still a nice looking relic all the same. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that its the blue diamond that sweet old lady in Titanic had ;D

I always take my magnifying glass and look at how bad it is scratched up, If its doesn't have to Meany scratches I think it's a good stone but what do I know I'm not a jeweler.

The facets still look pretty sharp. I'd expect glass to show more wear on the edge of the facets.

I'm gonna vote for semiprecious stone, but I don't have a clue about what type to suggest it might be. Very pretty stone, I really like the color.

Congratulations on an interesting find!

i would guess the stone is topaz, and some sort of brooch, any evidence of a broken pin, interesting thing

I am leaning towards Snowdragon as I have compared painstakingly all day colors and saphire is the only match if its real.
So my next question would be...... would it not be set in a more durable metal? That's why I do not have my hopes up as the setting is quite deteriorated.

Vicki,

A Gemologist at a good jewelry store can help.
By looking at the setting and making a wag
I would say it is a saphire called a yag saphire.
Maybe one of the first of the synthetic type.
Very historical but not that valuable.
I really would like to know myself ...
keep us filled in with your results, good or otherwise.

it is all history.

Sapphires used to be considered a semi precious stone (not sure if they still are) and were put in several different kinds of settings. Mine was about the same size, cut and color and it was worth about $90.00 or so. Maybe yours was in a silver plated setting and the plate wore off.
