First of the material on this story.
For those who venture up around Red Mountain City, Highland City and Moosetown (ghost towns) bear in mind that an old stagecoach route ran thru the region (today this route is said to be a forest service road). Some say back then it carried folks from Alder Gulch to Silverbow and passed thru a wooded pass where the stages where robbed. Looking at modern maps it would appear to be where Highway 15 passes to the east of Goat Mountain, even though the mentioned old mining camps are further to the northeast in what is termed the Highlands. What makes this region a potential site for hidden treasures is because of the number of folks that were killed passing thru here. It was one of the favorite spots for holding up the stage. Some called the area Bloody Bone Ridge or the Bone Ridge Trail because of the vast numbers of rotting bones. Prospectors never really checked out the area for mineral wealth due to the dangers involved. A fellow named Coyote Bill went there to check it out and never returned. It is said a friend traveled from Highland City to Moose Creek to see if he was ok. He was written off as another of the trail’s victims, but that bit of info also places the location of the Bloody Bone Ridge as somewhere between Red Mountain City and today’s highway 15 (Silverbow County). The next spring Coyote Bill was found sitting next to a tree. His friends dug a grave and struck gold! Supposedly they filed their claim as the Bone Ridge Claim and as for Bill they buried him back in Virginia City because he had lead them to a gold strike. There might be more gold to find in the area that was overlooked and there might even be some hidden by those robbers who operated in the region, one just never knows for sure!

Oddly enough the story centers around the search for a man named Coyote Bill and in the region there is a Coyote Hill! Could this be the location where Bill was found dead? One can find Coyote Hill at the junction of Fish Creek Road and Lime Kiln Road at the base of Red Mountain.
