I am posting this for a friend. It's a sterling silver hat/hair/tie pin :dontknow: of an owl holding what looks like a bottle of booze, wearing a blind fold. Anyone have any ideas?

The owl is mine (thanks Felinepeachy for posting it). The thing on its head is a scarf . It is knotted over the right shoulder. One end of the scarf hangs in front the other end can be seen protruding from behind the right wing. He is definately holding a bottle or a flask with his right wing. The general impression, with the scarf askew, tilted head, drooped wing, and the bottle is that of a drunken owl. Perhaps this is the origin of the saying "drunk as a hoot owl" or the pin was made as a result of that old saw.

The artifact was found in a field along an extremely old road with a spring nearby. The field was used for religious camp meetings in the late 1800's to maybe a bit into the early 1900's.

Hey there Bill { Calaloo } this is Dave from the other day. I thought for sure this item would be identified by now , sorry for mis leading you , usually Breezie and others jump on this kind of thing and identify it within a few days . Don't forget Shiloh and me for later hunts , whether it be MD'ing or arrow head hunting ...... It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely wife .

Mac

P.S. I found what I think is a piece of a spur the other day at the camp towards the Interstate from you , I'll try to post a picture tomorrow .

Thought I knew something but turned out no. Ivan Salis, you can't soar with the eagles if you hoot with the owls. And we used to say we were 'hooter than a drunk owl', but a lot more slurred.

I think the Owl is holding a Tootsie Pop...and its just seeing how many licks it takes to get to the center :laughing9: :laughing9:

Hey Gang, I've been on the NC coast since pre-Hurricane Earl, and now I'm playing catch-up on work stuff. I'm going to do some research on this one later on tonight. Right now, I'm agreeing with the 'have a night cap' look, and I'm thinking it might be a liquor give-a-way maybe for a particular liquor/beer/wine company; there is a Red Owl Liquor, and I'm sure there are/were more with an Owl logo. Neat find, Breezie

I've heard the phrase, "drunk as Cooter Brown", but never heard drunk as a hoot owl. :dontknow: One more thing for the files.
