"Blind" trench Hunting nets buttons, bullets & a haversack. Well... most of one!

Tried something new - having exhausted most of the signals in this area, we started digging holes with no signals in front of the trenches. Just started digging - got down about 18" and started listening. Sure enough, the signals started. We just kept digging and checking, digging and checking. When the signals stopped, we covered the hole and moved on. At my first, I dug a brass sack hook, then all the buckles, then the two rivets. I went pretty deep . . .

All in all, we found about 300 percussion caps, an eagle button and an eagle cuff, bullets both shot and dropped, including a cleaner, 3-ringers, gardners and enfields - 3 with the wood plugs still in the base. It was TOUGH work, but we had a blast.

excellent - especially in this heat!

Not sure about the haversack though - the hook and studs are from a knapsack rig, which is even better. We did the same thing years ago in NC along some trenches and it really did produce...though I highly encourage everyone that sees this to please do your best to fill the holes in and never dig the actual earthen mounds...can't let the archies have more ammunition.

Great hunt and digs man!

Right on all counts, Dan. Should have typed "Knapsack." And filling that hole in was the worst part at the end of the day - but the MOST important part in keeping your permission to hunt. As for the trenches, of course, you're right on the money. What really breaks my heart though, is this: Across the battlefield from these CS trenches, used to stand a fantastic line of Union trenches (obviously). But they were bulldozed to build homes. Hey, I GET IT that land is at a premium, and landowners have every right to do with it as they wish. But guess who yells and calls relic hunters all kinds of names? The residents of those houses sitting on what used to be a pristine site. OK, rant over.

Awesome job... Thats a lot of work you deserve everything you find.

Hard work pays off sometimes. Looks like it panned out for you. You got some nice looking finds.
