On Saturday, I spent most of my afternoon digging 69 memorial pennies, along with 4 wheats, a quarter and 2 dimes. After cleaning the dirt off, I added this lot to the clad collection and decided the jar was too heavy. My bank doesn't charge for using their coin machine, so down I went. I ended up with vouchers for about $50, and I didn't have to deal with tellers sneering at the appearance of my deposit. The machine even took the zinc memorials; you know, the ones that are half eaten away when they come out of the ground. Since it now costs more to make a penny than it's worth, and the government just outlawed melting them, I'm doing Washington a favor by re-introducing these gems into circulation.
