In 1887 the town of Blackwater was founded near the recently completed Mo. Pacific RR. By the 1940's, modern transportation made it easier for residents to travel further for employment and shopping needs and more difficult for small local merchants. Trains did not stop for stock, mail and passengers anymore. The local quarry closed because of fresh water springs.
By 1990, most of the downtown stores were empty and in deplorable condition. Only four businesses survived. Fortunately, several residents came together and started a movement to bring the town back to life
