Ok, found these three things in my yard in close vicinity , but assumed unrelated ... Until ....

( mine is rusted one) I found an identical replica , that they are calling a " antique blacksmith cutoff hardy for a stake plate "

I assumed the cup looking thing was just a peice of pipe , until I accidentally stumbled on this picture.

It even has that seam in it.
The pin I assumed was just a tow pin or something , until I started connecting the 3 things.
Ideas and thoughts , please?

I'm thinking you should have Superwoman arms digging all that iron... that is some big and deep stuff you have been excavating.

Are you after all metal? I'm a sissy, I run with the iron notched out-

Great finds though- good luck with the hunts.

It looks like a hardy to me, but I didn't know they were that large. It must have been a huge anvil to hold that hardy.

It's what interests me the most... The history of it... What time period was someone on my land... Wouldn't interest me so much if it wasn't at my own home .

lol, ok Holly it's like this, for probably hundreds of years before you there have been people on your land. those are probably mid 19th to early 20th century

I like that people have been here before me, makes me curious .

Pipe looks pounded on and damage cut off.(a heavy weight used to drive well pipe) guessing.
Many homesteads had a forge, rough estimate 4 foot table with a hand crank (snail shape) blower replacing the older bellows.
Usually a couple to a few different hammers and a variety of tongs. Most tools could be made once hammer(s) obtained. Coal broke small, wetted and mounded around blower grate(often in bottom of table) and fired to make "coke"for greater heat. We don,t see much wrought iron around anymore but was used on forge, but a pile or cut scrap pieces from being worked could suggest a forge was there. Also coal away from house in an area safe to throw hot sparks.H.H.

I'll look into it, that sounds awesome. However for some reason I doubt they kept very good records around these parts

Hardy tools could be sized to the job requirement . I have some odd ones I made for specific jobs .

I tried them a couple of years ago, and found no maps for rural areas, onlt towns and cities. Is this correct or am I not looking in the right place?

Holly, Checked your profile to get a general idea where u are from but not indicated.
You might try www.historicmapworks.com. I like it, lots of late 1800 homestead info for SE Michigan.
Many maps show schools, churches, post offices, black smiths, and town halls.
Might be helpful for your quest.

I'm in wooded rural area in PA with lots of history of furnaces surrounding my home . I did look up on historic maps... And found one for the late 1800's... And right where my house sits is a plot of land marked geo care... Surrounded by farms n pastures ... What tbe heck could that possibly be ? Late 1800's in farm and furnace country ... Scoured tbe Internet ... Coming up blank
