The 1870's blacksmith shop on our property went down in history with Katrina. We salvaged as much of the pecky cypress boards that we could, I did save all the handmade "window" doors. We were using the shop as a storage building, so there were 3 cast iron sinks, 1 cast iron tub with claw feet, about 30 old wooden windows with pulleys, anvils, tools & more cypress boards in there. I pulled enough 3, 5 & 6 inch square nails from the lumber, so I don't want to see any nails for a long time.

After clearing everything out, I started digging in the dirt floor...here are pictures of what I found so far.

#4 is ?...why shotgun brass is on this wooden plug no idea. UMC Co Black Club #12

#1 Small bottle with felt pellets...has the smell of iodine or creosote. Do you know what this is used for?

#2 Shotgun brass stating Winchester Leader #12; part of a old rule, the rest is unidentified.

#3 Picture of BSS during the flood of 1983.

Will post more pictures when they get developed.

Thanks for looking...

HH :)

I'm pretty sure the vial of strongly scented pellets is toothache medicine. Usually, they're cotton pellets saturated with oil of cloves (eugenol) &/or benzocaine, and come with a little flat pair of aluminum tweezers to help place a pellet into the cavity of the painful tooth.

The wooden plug with the shotgun brass may be a dummy round or plug. We used to put wooden plugs in the magazine tubes of our old pump shotguns to keep the load legal— only three shells, by law, although they would hold five.

#1 more finds from the ground "floor"
#2 blacksmith made relics found by MDing in back pasture, next to the river (log landing) where the logging road was located...believe there may have been a temporary shop located there.

Thanks, for looking!
