This one's a bit tougher (for me anyway). I gotta' think it's some type of key or wrench (square end would fit over a piece of equipment). I'm sure someone will hit the proverbial "nail on the head" for you. I'll keep thinkin' (this could get dangerous ;D).

Looks to me to be a part of an underground gas or water valve. The square end would be on the valve and a pole with a hook would be inserted into the round end to turn the valve on or off. Could be made of brass.

Just a WAG

Maybe a type of connector for rope or leather used for a quick release. It is very similar to what we use for a Belay Device much in the same manner when rappelling.

Here is an example of a modern one.

Could be on to something Steve but what about the age and "irregular widths". Maybe just wear and tear?

Can't be a Belay device, the square end would fray the rope or cause too much friction with the carabiner. Looks like a shut off key to a valve of some sort. What is the dimension on the inside of the square end?

It states faintly "FIG 1" on the middle portion.
