Sunday vmiairpwr07 and I revisited my colonial/Rev War site with high hopes of finding another numbered regiment button or old coin. As luck would have it we found neither but it still turned out to be a great day.

As Jon was digging his fourth bridle boss of the day he noticed that there were a lot of black glass shards in the hole. Intrigued, we broke out the small shovels and proceeded to unearth a small bottle dump that was jam packed with black glass bottle bases, necks, other broken pieces and pottery shards. The dump was only about three feet square but we excavated a huge pile.

In addition to black glass I found the necks of three small bottles that I'm pretty sure were medicine bottles and two wine glass stems.

I have just started cleaning the bottle shards and I noticed that about two thirds of the necks still have some of the wax that sealed the tops. I've never seen that before & wasn't aware that the tops were sealed other than with corks.

Once again we had a great time & look forward to the next adventure.

This is awesome! I'm currently buried under 3 feet of snow and my season is DONE, but seeing this stuff keeps me going. That's so cool that there is wax on those bottle necks. Love that in situ picture... that looks like one packed pit. Keep it up man... I certainly enjoy/need this entertainment from my southern friends while we are frozen up here

Thanks man. We sifted all the dirt that came out of the hole and there were no pipe stems, refuse or other artifacts- just glass and a little bit of pottery. Interesting. Hang in there-Spring will be here before you know it.

Cool pieces, I'd mess myself if I found a black bottle still intact!
Nice finds, hard work I bet?

Well done DND! That is a bunch of black glass... wow.

Best of luck to you!

I WOULD BE HAPPY AS HAEL TO FIND THE BOTTLE SHERDS . NICE FINDS ..

That is awesome, think about it some day a couple hundred years from now someone might find one of my bottle dumps. HA HA great stuff keep posting for us who are frozen in, we can detect through people like you. Thanks

WOW! Love those finds! Intriguing about the absence of pipe stems, but perhaps this was a large one time dump (such as at a military camp) and there were no pipstems mixed in because they were all dumped at the same time without any other "rubbish" thrown in. Ive found crystal glass stems with those swirl patterns at a pit from around the same period around charleston. I personally think that they are incredible relics! Love all of that glass, almost like a time capsule right there! Wtg!

That's some ancient glass right there! Wish I could find stuff that old at my old landfill washouts. :treasurechest::thumbsup:

Wow that is some beautiful early glass. Bill D will love that pile. What a great spot you've got bud

Not like that they don't. Hand blown with crude rims and pontil scars on the bases. 1700s style.

Wow,what a dream dig! I would love to discover an old trash site like that and dig such neat pieces of history.

That's what I'm thinking. There was a British camp there and I believe that as you said they dug a small hole and dumped them in there at one time.

Also do you know what the green glass bases were? Were they medicine bottles? That was my initial assumption ( here's one I found broken justView attachment 1265114 like that) at the top right

I'm pretty sure they were from medicine bottles, and probably were part of the same two bottles that I found the necks to. Very thin glass. I believe they were also from the British occupation & were used in the treatment of wounded troops.

BTW that is a very nice pile of pottery, glass and pipe stems. Nice finds! Did you find them by sifting?
