I am so undecided on which Whites machine to buy. I was seriously considering the MXT. Am I biting off to much so to speak as I am a beginner detectorist and also graduating up from a BH Pioneer 505.
Should I go with an M6? Easier learning curb? I don't want to loose my enthusiasm and obsession with my new found hobby!
I realize that any machine will take time and patience to master and will probably only come from experience with any one particular detector.
I program 1000 Channel Trunk Trackers. Had a couple of years of electronics school ( some time back) and am O.K with computers as far as navigation and getting the things I need done with it. I'm very serious about this decision as I am selling some of my prized coins out of my collection just to get this new detector. I don't want to be disappointed. Any genuine help and thoughts will be very much appreciated from the knowledgeable users here. Thanks in advance for some helpful advice. Shane

you said MXT not DFX so i dont think there is a tremendious learning curve for this excellent machine. Designed from a gold machine there is a lot of power in the box thats why it likes hot rocks. Id suggest getting Jeff Fosters new book on the MXT he really provides a lot of very good information and testing NOT explained in any manual. You didnt really say what kind of hunting you were interested in. It does a fair job nugget hunting, needs a smaller coil to coin hunt in trashy areas, you need to balance on the wet or dry sand which ever you hunt on the beach. This is a good deep machine. The M6 is pretty good as well but doesnt have nearly the power. The MXT has one of the better ground balance systems in a whites machine. It just takes a williness to put the time in to learn a detector not a degree.

Thanks! I should have explained that I will be mostly coin shooting and the possibility of some relic hunting in the future. I hunt basically parks and such and havnt had any mineral problems so far with my BH. I want something that will hopefully have a bit more depth and I would love a VDI readout.

Shane, get the MXT or M6 now and you will have it down before you go to the Bayou hunt. Nothing to it! Jump in!
I will have all my coils at the hunt and you are welcome to try them out as they work on either machine. I haven't used the M6 so I can't say much about it although it gets great reviews. The MXT however, I have been using five years and wouldn't give it up for any other machine thats out there right now. I know what you mean though, putting out some serious cash you want to be sure. I originally was going to buy a DFX or an Explorer. Had them all checked out then along came the MXT. I made the right decision, for me anyway.

Thanks alot folks.......Tin your user name makes me think of Ted Nugent everytime I see it. I think now the M6 is the way to go for me. It will plenty enough for my needs. I know the MXT isnt but about 100 bucks more but when parting with my collection or part of it I should say 100 is alot! I love this hobby so much! I was out by a lake near LSU at 5 oclock in the morning recently.........it was dark but I was getting a good repeat tone and found a few quarters. Is the display backlit on the M6?

I went from a Bounty hunter to a DFX. Yes at first I felt overwhelmed but its an easy machine to start out with since it has the turn on and go programs. The very first thing you need to do is lay different coins out and get used to the sounds. Once you get that figured out, it all gets better from there!! 8)

The Amboy Dukes, rock out!

Not sure if the M6 is backlit or not, the MXT is not. Since you are going to get the M6 you should see if they will toss in the 6X9 DD coil for a 100.00. Worth a shot!

M6 does not have a back light. But a small head lamp and using 7 tones in the dark is probably the way to go. I suggest starting out with the sensitivity at #70. This is below preset but will make it run pretty quiet.

I have hunted with a XLT for the past 6 years. Sorta wish I went with the MXT after trying my friends on a relic hunt. Very easy machine to use and still stable with sens. and gain ALL the way up! He had it set up with the "super 12" and I was just hammering on relics so much he said he would make me rent it next time.
Take the plunge and get the MXT! You will have it figured out in 2 weeks and the machine itself will last years!
Don't be afraid to shop around either, I can get the MXT for $640.00 from one guy and $700 from another which is well below "suggested retail" from some dealers.

P.S. --- Whites dealers are allowed to take off as much as 20%.

Heya Shane,
Im gonna be at the bayou hunt and I do have a M6. Wished you were closer as I would let you test drive mine. I like the M6, very easy to operate, fast response on targets, easy to swing slow in a trash infested area, using the 6 inch coil. If you get one or MXT, we can compare notes at the hunt. If you would like more info, drop me a private message.

Hi Gator......... I am absolutely stressed at making this decision. I have laid out all my favorite coins from my collection and now realize just how vast my collection is. I have uncirculated rolls, bills, Morgans, Shield Nickels, Mercury dimes..........the list goes on. I am having trouble deciding what to part with.
Look forward to meeting you and hope I'm Packing the M-6 when we get there.
