Hello fossil thread, not over here much. I found some bone on my recent trip to a gravel bar. I found several bones. 3 I’d say are cow/bison the rib I think probably a deer. The jaw bone I’m hoping is bison, it is darker than the others and somewhat hefty. It also has a pretty good stylid on the molar… what do you think? Am I on the right track or could it be a different animal, especially if it’s Pleistocene old… camel? Elk?… not enough to tell?

Good finds! Those have a heavy bovine look about them. I have a fossil bison cannon bone that looks a lot like that, it measures around 9” if I remember right.

Not getting a whole lot of play haha, thanks for the reply I know it’s difficult to distinguish between the two, I thought the extra stain and the heft might be good signs it’s older than the other bones.

Very cool thank you for taking the time to do that, I can have my opinions but an expert backing me up is good enough to claim it’s bison with confidence. Now I just need to find a carbon dating machine for 50$ so I can know how old, 100 years? 1,000? 100,000?… I looked up a lab once to see if it was possible, they asked what university I was with. After that i realized that’s probably not something people can just have done out of curiosity, at least not for a reasonable price

There isnt much traffic over here in the fossil section, I like to see what folks find. Thanks for posting.
