A buddy of mine I hunt with(WhiteBoy) found this about a year ago in southeastern SC, not to far from the Savannah River. His thoughts are that it is a Birdstone.. Any thoughts would be appreciated.. The Archeologist can seem to agree on what the hell it is. All I know is that it is way cool..
Thanks in advance.

It looks like a atlatl weight, but it is so small, I'm thinking some type of fetish bead. JMO it looks like it was a much bigger object and was reused. I say that because of the size of the holes in it, for such a small item they are big IMO:icon_scratch:It is a great find, maybe someone can shed more light on this.

If I were to go with my first thought I would say it was probably be used as an atlatl weight.. And would probably call it a type of boat stone.
I've never seen one drilled like that but it makes sense.
Ha... We were typing at the same time

It almost looks like a repurposed broken celt bit.

I'm guessing that it is an atlatl weight as well. It's a really nice find for sure! I'd have been very happy to have brought that home.

Very cool and interesting I agree with rack and gator ;)

Kind of looks like a harpoon toggle, but I don`t know. There are serrations or tally marks on it.

For whatever it's worth. It is made out of green slate and there are 22 tally marks . Eleven on each side. Another tidbit is that some birds have eleven primary feathers on each wing.. For whatever it's worth :o)_

That is the strangest thing I have ever seen to be worked and drilled like that. I have no idea it does not fit anything I have ever seen. No idea….. but one heck of an artifact.

Very odd, I'd say a bead of some sort, very nice find.

I have never seen anything like that either, awesome and rare piece apparently, whatever it is. Could be some sort of charm, and more artwork/ mystical, rather than a tool or functional object? Could have hung around the neck, shoulders or waist, or could have had feathers, bone, claws or teeth, secured or inserted through the holes? Could have had a 6" sharp skewer thrust thru the holes, and the lower septum of the wearer as a piercing, and given the shaman wearer an instant beak, to give him the powers of the bird god? I could go on, and on.. Thanks for showing it.

Cool piece for sure. I can see it being worn on the face well the nose to be a pierced item. Just a guess

Wouldn't a real beak be a lot easier?

...yes very unusual and quite nice whatever it turns out to be....liked what you said about the birds wing feathers & 11...interesting! Thanks for sharing it!

I thought about this one this morning. It could have been a piece worn on the nose like rock said. That was done a lot in some cultures.
