Found an old biloxi police badge while detecting on private property in Ethel La. Any ideas how to look up the owner? Should I call the biloxi P.D to verify that it is not from a fallen officer? 0805171314.jpg

ALL police badges I have ever worn were numbered. A picture of the back might let us know the pin style and time frame it was made in. It is YOUR badge now. If you are close why don't you go in and talk to the chief? Fallen officer, lost badge, doesn't matter. Even if you don't want to take it in with you remember the number on it and go in and talk to them. DON'T let them take it from you. It belongs to YOU.

My free 2¢

You could also go to the library there and see if there are ANY fallen officers from that department. The local history section would have that information.

This is one of my dream finds as I am a police officer. It looks like there is a lot of info on that badge. I hope you have good luck tracing those numbers.

If I find it=no value to me. Relative=Value
If it has a number and can be ID'd, I would look for a family survivor if the original owner was deceased.

Great find. I'd probably try contacting the Public Information Officer.

Cool find...Congrats !!

It is indeed a hat badge. They possibly do not wear hats anymore but might. I am sure the police department can give you information on it.

As for an approximate date, I am GUESSING 1940's - 1960. That is a guess and not even an educated one as I was a cop in the 80's and early 90's.

I bet the department can shed some light on who wore it and when it was used.

The screw peg in the middle went through a hole in the cap, The small bent over pin at the bottom went into the hat to make sure the badge stayed upright and didn't move or turn. Whoever had badge 29 also would have had hat 29.

Welcome to tnet good find!!!!!!

Awesome find, I wonder what the cop was doing when he lost it.:occasion14:

Scuba is correct on the description. It is missing the soldered on- raised numbers in the center. It would cost more for the department to repair, replace, and replate that hat badge than it would to buy a new one. Keep it, display it with pride, and never use it for criminal purposes. Congrats on a great find. Sub 8-)

To be honest, I would just keep it. I could see them taking it and it going in the bottom of some drawer. No offense to Police but I think it would be better enjoyed in your hands, I know it would mine. I would cherish a vtg/antique local police badge, especially if I found it.

IMO enjoy your find and don't feel guilty about keeping it. Great find. If you are that curious and don't want to risk a situation, then just call and ask some generic questions about badges to get the info.

Ruby, Welcome to Treasurenet.
But I disagree with you. I'd go everything reasonable to return the badge to whoever wore it or to his kin.
Short of that, I'd donate it to the Boloxi PD if (underline IF) they would assure me it would be publically displayed with a history of the BPD.
I see little difference between this find and one where a military service tag ('dog tag') had been found with the soldier's name.
From my experience in returning two military dog tags to either the soldier or an heir (and watching or reading about their thankfulness), was of much greater value than if I had (selfishly??) kept it for myself.
Don......

Very nice find, IMHO I believe its a hat badge do to the threaded rod in the back. Each hat has a reinforced hole in the front where it fits and is secured by a round disk like object.

Hello Squareflipper. Nice one!!! I have many toy badges but still looking for my 1st "real thing".

Good Luck with your research on your most excellent find. C9
