BigTim's find today! Chinese Coin in TN

"BigTim1973" asked me to try and get this up for you guys...I was 'spossed to go with him but I was abit under the weather and didn't. Anyways it's an old Chinese coin found here in Tennessee. Neither of us know much about it. I have seen them before but that's about it. Can someone give Tim some more info on it? Also what is it made of? And what would be the best way to clean it? Thanks for any info and enjoy the pics..And congrats to you Tim! I sure hope this works......

Re: BigTim's find today! Chinese Coin in TN

After looking without much luck at all today, I decided to dig a few VDI numbers I normally would not have. It registered 24-27 on my Xterra 50 and thought it would be a modern pistol round which I have dug at this site before. It was found at an old house that was built about 1900 that has RR tracks running along the edge of the property. I was told from the gentleman that gave me permission to hunt this site, that the RR tracks were put in there in 1887-1888. I wonder if the Chinese built these tracks here and was left from them? I have heard the Chinese built alot of the railway throughout the U.S. Any Ideas guys? Tim

I found a couple of Chinese coins earlier this year, they were found right near an old railroad station. According to my research, they are brass, and can easily be identified by their markings. Here is the link I found to ID mine. http://www.joelscoins.com/china.htm Good luck on ID'ing the coin, and nice find!.

According to some of the links the guys have posted, looks like the coin was minted around 1889-1908. At least that is what I have come up with. Also might be worth a buck!! LOL

Yes they are commonly found near railroad tracks,as many of the laborers were Chinese.I find alot of them in Gold Rush sites and some date back to the 1600's.Some were brass, and some were made of bronze.I also have found them made of something almost like pewter and are always nearly disintegrated.Good luck Iding them there are hundreds of variations!!!

It looks as if this may be made of bronze or copper, has a reddish tint to it. Well it sure beat digging up a correded up old zinc penny!! Yea I think it is neat too even if it is not worth much!!

Alot of guys out heredig em and dont think too much about them, not me I never get tired of digging them. The story they could tell!!They came from China by boat!!They say the white man gave them a penny for 100 of them!I dont know how much truth there is to that but knowing how the Chinese were treated back then I wouldnt doubt it.I think they used them amongst themselves and in the gambling game of Phan Tan.

I found 2 at my uncles house. One was today and another was a month ago. They were used by the chinese and it dates back from 1736-1795, If i remember correctly. The chinese must have brought them here when they came on the ships to the U.S. back in the early 1800's bringing all sorts of late 1700's coins with them as well as early 1800's coins with them. They are not worth that much but are really cool to find! :) My uncles house was an apple farm which the british used the chinese to help them pick apples. Thats how I found mine. On my detector they come up under the nickle range/foil range. I found one on ebay awhile abck and they are worth $2.
