I found and posted a thread on this Big Fat Ugly Gold Ring that came from the sand at Newport Beach, CA, on 10/31/13.

The ring tested 14k on the gold, but it appears to have copper mixed in between the gold to give it a very unusual look.

I scrubbed her up with baking soda and a toothbrush. Now she is Ugly & Pretty at the same time. It looks like something that Fred Flintstone would wear.

This MD hobby never ceases to amaze me with the stuff you can find

Before & After Photos Below ... Thanks for Looking

That cleaned up real nice. Congrats on the 14K!

Are you sure the copper colored metal is not rose gold? I could see how the copper could oxidize out of it in salt.

Sure looks a lot better now. Nice find.

I don't think I've ever seen one single nugget ring that actually looks like a real gold nugget

That ring was popular in the 70,s i think iseen that style before

You know, you could be right ... I will need to test the copper color that is inside the ring. Thanks for the tip

Is that a nugget ring made out of Dead Hills Gold? jmho

Much better, I thought that thing would have failed an acid test upon first looks.

Your Right Gunrunner61 ... I just did a Google search for Nugget Rings and the copied photo below is of the same style.

Thanks, I guess it's not so ugly after all :) Maybe I should have left the patina on it?

These suckers are expensive, especially the larger rings

That is a very unique and rugged looking ring! Congrats on the verification.

I think its an awesome ring.Congrats.HH.

I dug a somewhat similar 1970's 14k gold ring this summer at an iron-infested CA beach. Huge hunks of commercial iron had been eroding under the sand for decades. My ring was mostly covered with a very thin layer of that leached iron, most of which I flicked off with fingernail or toothpick. So possibly your gold ring, rather than being deliberately made with some copper overlay, may instead have picked up an iron layer over the decades under the sand like mine did. If so, it can probably be mechanically removed if you want to. Andi

A lot of Mexican gold has a bunch of copper in the amalgam so maybe that is what it is.I had a 14k gold bracelet from Mexico that would turn my wrist green it had so much copper in it.
