maybe because they used high ceilings? and the tall doors helped it stay cooler during the hot weather , for better ventilation?

since they didnt have air conditioning back in 1850, they built the ceilings and doors bigger, and keep it cooler inside , the large doors would be open during the day to keep the buildings cool inside, smaller doors would make it more stuffy and hot inside, since hot air rises, they needed higher doors and ceilings.

another possibility, the taller doors let more light in, since the buildings didnt have lots of windows.

The iron doors were actually the security doors of the period. They protected the inner doors. Why the inner doors (and therefore the iron security doors - shutters) had to be so tall is intriguing. I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe, as Comanche Todd suggests, to allow more light in or better air circulation. Or maybe they had some really tall stuff to take in there, like shelving or something. I will be happy to learn the reason, too. I've often wondered myself, but never asked anybody.

Maybe it was for a stable, Hertz rent a horse? ::)

This was the first idea that crossed my mind.

Someone may have eluded to this.. but... They might be big for the same reasons they have big doors on buildings today... ease of moving large and bulky equipment and product through.

If they are settling an area and have a huge item comming in, then just build the doors to facilitate that...
