It has been a couple of weeks since I posted so I though I would share some interesting finds from a couple of quick outings.
I went back to an old road that I do, and was planning on heading to an old homestead that I have been meaning to take some more time on. On the way a hit a short patch where there were 4 buttons in one hole, and some others very close by along with an 1824 Nova Scotia One Penny Token and the copper chain, I never made it to the homestead.
One button is American, a US Federal Navy Officers button from about the 1830's, it is in hard shape
But originally would have looked like this, except that the one I found has an indented design rather than raised and a slightly more ornate reverse with flowers between the words Treble Gilt, which makes me suspect it is older.
A couple of the flat buttons in the same hole were marked Warranted Rich Gold, I can't make the rest out, these would also date to the 1830's, some matching cuff buttons were found as well.
The copper chain is interesting, it broke at one point and somebody tied it back together. I suspect the age is the same, 1830's, as all the other relics in this location.
The One Penny Token is an nice find. These are almost as large as a silver dollar and I suspect they were difficult to loose. I have found a pile of Nova Scotia half pennies this year but this is my first One Penny. I now have a new goal, to find the entire set of half pennies. So far this year I have the 1824, 1832, 1843, 1861, 1862 & 1864 (edit, oops, the 1860's coins are one cents, not half cents although they were reduces in size to match that of an earlier half cent) as well as some undatable ones. I only need the 1823, 1840 and 1856 to have them all. I found the 1824 last week in an area I have been over many times before. It was half way between the foundation and the well, I don't know how I missed it before.
We braved the rain one day and went back to a site where I have found another NS half penny, the 1832, and some War of 1812 buttons. This time we found a nice War of 1812 Royal Regiment of Artillery cuff button, a musket ball, and part of a child's toy wagon. How I would love to find the rest of that, child's toys are always poignant.
One of my favorite finds this week was this RamRod guide that I found up at our camp. It looks to me like the number 2 guide to a Brown Bess Musket, which were fairly common around here.
Although the 10 cent coin only dates to 1962, some silver is always nice as well.
I can't wait for the weekend to get out again.
