No detail left on reverse seems to have corroded away!

Looks like a Machin's Mills Halfpenny... 1788 type (most common I think)

Are you willing to try the back anyways? It might have just enough of something to see...

Certainly does! Here is one that closed on ebay for 1500 bucks but...it looks like it was in good shape, but if in good shape its worth 1500 your daughters being just being IDable might be worth a couple hundred. Take it down to an expert!

Don says, I do not think there is enough detail showing to say it is a Machins, The bust is also very similar to dozens of counterfeits. With that said, I will look into this further. The vast majority of counterfeit KGIII coppers are not Machins Mills. They are special when found, I have one out of dozens and dozens of KGIII counterfeits, my son has none out of dozens of counterfeits.

So my answer now is to say PASS :icon_scratch:

Thanks Don... I appreciate both the back-up and the being corrected, or at least being cautioned as to the KGIII counterfeits. I'd hate to commit to a falsehood... Thanks!

I'm normally your friend and ally, but I think you just crossed the line.

Montana Jim's overlay post does it for me. If there are "real" and "fake" versions of this coin, I don't know anything about it. The picture on the coin in the overlay is the same picture as the dug coin. Thick, thin, fake, real. At this point it doesn't matter. I was even going to say before I saw the coin in good shape I was going to say it looked like the bust had shoulder armor on and a ribbon in its hair. Cool find man. I have detected off and on for the last 30 years (started when I was little with g-pa) and never made a find that good!

It's not that there is a "real" or "fake" one.  The counterfeits KG coppers were contemporaneous counterfeits--and they are all over 200 years old!  Don and Jim were both just trying to figure out which variety of counterfeit it was--and MOST of the KGIII coins found ARE contemporaneous counterfeits. I hope you understand.

I would've given 'em a lump of coal, but the "coal system" is no more... :(

I see. I guess I don't know that much about 200 year old copper coins, but I do know this. The one in the pic looks a heck of a lot like the one Montana posted. Phooey! I liked the coal system. I was working on getting some coal! I wanted to see if I could break 100.
