big cent?

My husband a couple years ago dug a ditch from the garage to the house to put electric in the garage - yea right. But a lightbulb went off. :icon_thumleft: That ditch is 2 feet deep. Saved me alot of digging. Gonna be all over that ditch like white on rice. I dug a little and found an old pad lock and I think a large cent. Pretty crapped up tho. How do I clean it? OhioDeb

Re: big cent?

Can you show the edge? If it's quite a thick disc, it may be a large cent, which are approximately twice the thickness of a current cent, according to the coins currently on my desk.

If not, your object may be a conduit cut-out: thinner and easily removed (and usually tossed instead of trashed).

Re: big cent?

Hmm...Hard to tell...In that condition I would warm up some hydrogen peroxide ( 1 cup or more) till it starts to boil in the microwave and then place the coin and the hydro in a zip lock bag. Seal it and leave it alone for a couple hours then take a peek, the dirt should come off with a very gentile rub and/ or an rinse in distilled water after. Repeat if necessary.

Re: big cent?

Looks like iron, see if a magnet sticks to it. If it does, it is not a large cent
